Sending Your First Invoice

This is one of the most exciting parts of starting a new business. So many things have gone right to get you to this point. You will have

  • Had an idea that you wanted to start a business
  • Registered your business with either an ABN or as a Company
  • Found your first customer
  • Provided your customer with service, hopefully going above and beyond to secure a great word-of-mouth marketing campaign, and;
  • Gotten ready to charge your customer and make your first dollar in revenue!

There are a few tips and tricks to make sure your invoice perfect. They are:

  • Making sure you get the tax treatment right - do you need to charge GST for each service you provide or not?
  • Selecting a payment method - will they pay into your business account or do you need to accept a credit card?
  • Sending and reminding your customer to pay within a reasonable timeframe

There are multiple ways to solve these problems, such as writing an invoice in Microsoft Word and attaching your account details to the bottom of the invoice.

However that's only half of the problem solved! Every time you send an invoice, you will need to keep track of how much income you're making as well so that you easily know where your business stands (and at tax time),.
